PART 2: VICTORY AS A CHRISTIAN

Warning signs you may be losing the battle

Strategy 10. Do not be trapped by the love of money

At present, some Christians are rich, some are poor and some are in between. How much money you should earn or how you should spend the money you have is something each Christian should pray about. The Bible gives us very clear guidelines in regards to wealth and money.

Wealth is deceitful and can replace God
Jesus warns us about the "deceitfulness of wealth which can choke us and make us unfruitful" (Matthew 13:22). Don't think that wealth is neutral because Jesus warns us about it using very strong language. "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money" (Matthew 6:24). As the Bible so clearly tells us "He who has loves money never has money enough" (Ecclesiastes 5:10).

Money can destroy us and our faith
"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" (1 Timothy 6:9,10). Paul the apostle records the example of his co-worker when he says; "Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica" (2 Timothy 4:10).

Don't put your hope in earthly riches
"Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth where moths and rust destroy … rather store up for yourselves treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:19,20). Jesus tells us to "seek first his kingdom and his righteousness" (Matthew 6:33). Jesus told a parable of a rich man who said to himself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself? "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich towards God" (Luke 12:19-21).

If you are rich then go and do good deeds and share
Paul the Apostle tells Timothy to "command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share" (1 Timothy 6:17-19). Paul the apostle shows the right attitude for the Christian when he says, "I have learnt the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry … I can do everything through him who gives me strength" (Philippines 4:12,13).

Don't equate being miserable with being godly
"God richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment" (1 Timothy 6:17-19) and has given us "glorious riches" (Ephesians 3:16) so don't equate being miserable and without joy with being godly and a Christian! Regardless of our situation, Christians should be "filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy" (1 Peter 1:8). This joy will never be achieved if we put our hope in wealth.

Strategy 11: You do not need to fear death

God encourages Christians by telling them: "Jesus too shared in our humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death - that is, the devil, and free us who all our lives were held in slavery by our fear of death" (Hebrews 2:14,15).

Strategy 12: Do not give up!

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened" (Matthew 7:7,8).

Strategy 12: Look forward to heaven!

We must realise as Christians that "we are aliens and strangers on earth" and that we should be "longing for a better country - a heavenly one" (Hebrew 11:13,16). "We bought nothing into this world, and we can take nothing out of it" (1 Timothy 6:7) and that "to live is Christ and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). In Heaven, "God will wipe away every tear from your eyes and there will be no more crying" (Revelation 21:4). Set your eyes on your crown in heaven and not the fading, rusting things of this world - money, power, momentary pleasures, prestige and possessions.

Strategy 13: Know the world is a battlefield!

Imagine walking into the middle of a fierce battle, being unaware the battle was raging! Jesus says; "In this world you will have trouble." Jesus did not say we might have trouble but that we will have trouble. The good news is that "Jesus has overcome the world" (John 16:33). Jesus is saying to many of us, "Wake up to yourselves. This world is a spirit battlefield. Know it and be prepared to fight and protect yourself." We must take our "stand against the devil's schemes" (Ephesians 6:11) because "your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

Strategy 14: Remember it is a spiritual battle we fight

You need discernment in the spiritual world
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God" (1 John 4:1). It is useless to try and protect yourself against a violent storm with a gun! This is the way it will be with any Christian who is not in step with the Holy Spirit.

The Bible tells us
* "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25).
* "Do not put out the Spirit's fire" (1 Thessalonians 5:19).
* "Do not grieve the Spirit" (Ephesians 4:30).
* "Be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18).
* "Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts" (1 Corinthians 14:1).

The Holy Spirit gives us assurance
The Holy Spirit also helps us to know we are one of God's children. "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children" (Romans 8:16). This assurance will give us much strength in the battle.

Don't block out God
A woman apparently foolishly said; "I'm going to church tomorrow but I hope nothing supernatural happens!" Be careful that you do not take the position of blocking out all spiritual activity in your life because in the process you will block out God. God has put us in a battle against spiritual forces of evil. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12).

We need inner power to live!
Misused power is always dangerous but God wants us to have the power to live as we should in this life. Paul the apostle wrote to his Christian readers at Ephesus saying; "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power" (Ephesians 3:16-18). Pray that God will give you His power to live and have victory in this spiritual battle.

Stratgey 16: Do not put God in a box

Careful you don't misunderstand what the Bible says
It is possible that some of our cherished doctrines about the Christian life can be wrong and we limit God. If you are struggling it may be because some of your doctrines are wrong and this stops God being active in your everyday life. Re-examine your doctrines!

Go God's way not your own
We don't want to change because we like things to go our own way You may be restricting God because you are not being obedient and you won't change. Jesus is your Lord - submit to Him!

Strategy 17: Don't blame God

"Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker … Does the clay say to the potter, 'What are your hands making?'" (Isaiah 45:9). "But who are you, O Man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this'" (Romans 9:20). These two verses illustrate the point and nothing needs to be added!

Strategy 18: God is the Creator - evolution is a lie!

In the beginning GOD created
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). This opening statement of the Bible tells us that GOD created the universe. The explanation that God is the creator of the universe will satisfy anyone scientifically, intellectually and spiritually who inquires about the question "Where did we come from?" with open mind and heart.

Jesus says there was a world wide flood
Jesus says; "As in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them away" (Matthew 24:38,39). Jesus tells us that the worldwide flood of Noah was a real event and the Bible is reliable. We can trust what Jesus tells us. (Read 14 good reasons to read the bible)

Evolution contradicts science, common sense, Jesus, God and the rest of the Bible

Evolution is a not an undeniable fact and it contradicts science, common sense and what Jesus, God and the rest of the Bible tell us. The term 'evolution' is referred to here as the process in which non-living material supposedly became living and increased in complexity to produce living things (including humans) over millions of years by mistakes in the genes (mutations) and the process of natural selection.

In the last days mockers will deliberately forgot God is Creator
As Christians we must correct those who mock and deliberately forget that the heavens and the earth were created by God's word. "In the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires … they deliberately forgot that long ago by god's word the heavens and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed" (2 Peter 3:3,5,6).

Scientific Evidence Against Evolution

Strategy 19: Be prepared to be disciplined by God

God is our Father and He loves us. As a child of God, expect to be disciplined by Him. We might not like it at the time but it is for our own good. Accept God's discipline and learn from it. "God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness" (Hebrews 12:10).
